Athens &
Attica Public Transport
Public Transport network consists of: URBAN:
Buses, Trolley buses, ISAP (subway) and METRO. SUBURBAN:
Long distance buses in Attica.
Getting Around
The Athens bus network, AUTO (Athens Urban Transportation Organization
or in Greek, OASA, Organismos Astikon Siginonion Athinon) includes
modern, air-conditioned buses that run basically anywhere you want
to go. Tickets should be bought in advance from kiosks or news stands
(periptero). At the time of publication a one-way ticket cost ?0.45.
The Athens Metro system is a three-line system that covers the center
of Athens and extends to its nearest suburbs. With over a half million
daily riders the city has less traffic, less pollution, and more culture
(there are three Metro stations with free public museums). The fare
of ?0.70 is valid for 90 minutes and any transfers within that period
provided you do not leave the station.
Athens transport covers all Attica .In the center of Athens there
are mostly 3 different means of transport : the blue buses the yellow
trolleys and partly the Metro. For buses and trolleys tickets are
obtain at kiosks and in the terminals, be sure to validate your ticket
entering the bus. Tickets for the metro are available in the stations.
The following charts gives you the stations of intercity buses and
trains for every direction in Greece.

The cheaper way is by taking buses and trolleys. Buses
Buses
run frequently throughout the city, stopping at blue-colored bus stop
signs. The fare for the bus is a ?- 0,45 ticket which must be inserted
in a machine inside the bus to be valid. These tickets are available
at special blue booths near bus stops or at many kiosks throughout
the city. A trunk line bus system began to operate this winter in
Athens with these buses connecting to local lines.
The bus system in Athens is best used to travel to areas outside of
the capital while the trolley bus system is best for travel within
the city.
The mini buses run through the center of Athens and one is even free.
The number 150 mini bus, which stops at red signs every two blocks
and there is no charge, goes up busy Stadiou St.and connects one from
the two major squares of the capital, Omonia and Syntagma. The bus
also takes you to the Monastiraki Flea Market and ends up at the Athens
Food Market on Athinas St.
The other two mini buses are numbers 100 and 200, one must purchase
a ?- 0,45 bus ticket. The 100 goes up Academias St., makes stops at
Syntagma Square and Omonia, and also go to the Athens Food Market
and Monastiraki.
The 200 makes its way through the same streets, but also visits the
plush Athens district of Kolonaki (where there are many exclusive
shops) and ends up at the ? Pedion Tou Areos Park ? where one can
take buses to places such as Rafina, Porto Rafti, Oropos, Marathon
and Cape Sounion.
Buses to western, southern Greece and the Ionian islands are available
at the Peloponnisos Bus Station,100 Kifissou Street. Buses to northern,
eastern Greece and Evia island leave from the terminal at 260 Liossion
Street. BUSES

Trolleys can transport you throughout Athens for a ?- 0,45 ticket,
the same ticket used on the buses. These yellow or purple-colored
trolleys stop at yellow-colored signs throughout the capital. Virtually
all the trolleys stop at either Syntagma Sq., Academias St., Omonia
Sq. or Kaniggos Sq.
Trolleys are a big help to get to many of the sites within Athens.
For example, if you wish to go to the National Archaeological Museum
on Patission St. from Syntagma Square, on Panepistimiou St. or Amalias
Av. take trolleys numbered 2, 4, 11 and 15. Fare for trolleys is a
?- 0,45 ticket, the same for the buses. The trolleys do not stop exactly
at the museum, but at the Athens Polytechnic Institute, just half
a block away on the same side of the street.
If you are interested in going to the Acropolis, you 're best bet
is taking the trolley numbered 9 which goes to the Thission. You can
take this trolley on Stadiou St. or in Syntagma Square. One can take
trolleys numbered 2, 4 and 11 to the old Olympic Stadium (Kalimarmaro)
where there is a stop in front of the site. Again these trolleys can
be picked up at Syntagma Square, Stadiou St., Patission St. and other
yellow-colored stops which have the numbers of the trolleys listed.
Trolley numbers 8, 13 and 14 from Patission St. takes you to the U.S.Embassy
and the Megaron (Athens Concert Hall) on Vas. Sofias Av. The trolley
goes up Academias St. and Alexandras Av.
Trolley number 10 from Syntagma Square takes you to the Olympic Airways
headquarters on Syngrou Av.
And remember, don't be afraid to ask someone which trolley or bus
to take. Greeks are very helpful and almost all of them know English.
