The prefecture of Karditsa is found in the north-western area of Thessaly and is bordered
by the prefectures of Trikala, Larissa, Fthiotida, Evritania and Arta. Karditsa, the capital
of the prefecture, is built near a tributary of the Pineios, in the heart of the rich Thessalian
plain.

With its three main squares and lovely Pafsilipo Park, this new town is a model of town
planning. It has three museums - the Christian Museum, devoted to religious art, and two
exhibiting folk-art.

	It is worth taking the trip to N. Plastira, an artificial lake 800 metres above sea level, set amidst the spectacular Agrafa mountains, the unspoiled villages of Mesenikolas, Bezoula, Neohori and Kastania. In the vicinity of the Megdova (Tavropos) dam, four parks have been created, and the whole region will be developed for tourism.


	Other poles of attraction for the visitor are the Smokovo and Kaitsa spas, filia with its sanctuary to Athena Itonia, the Mycenaean beehive tomb (1500 B.C.) outside Georgiko and the many other ancient and Byzantine monuments scattered throughout the prefecture. The mountain range of the prefecture of Karditsa is found along the ancient road that connected western Thessalia to the Epirus regions. The presence of Ancient Greek races until the Roman invasion in 168 B.C. is very strong proven by the fact that archaeological digs have uncovered many ancient settlements, cities and fortifications from even prehistoric times. It is unknown when exactly the area became inhabited and when the settlements took on their present form.
