The Florina prefecture is located in the region known as Western Macedonia and borders with FYROM in the north, Albania in the west, Kastoria and Kozani in the south and Pella in the east.
The natural environment is a combination of mountains, plains and lakes. It is especially well known for the lakes of Great Prespes, Small Prespes, Vergoritida and Petron and so many more.
The winters in this area are especially cold and there is a winter resort in Pisoderi. The temperature often falls below zero in the coldest months. During the summer, visitors can sunbathe on the banks of the lakes Small Prespes and Vergoritida, which have been transformed accordingly. The natural environment which is rich in vegetation, the beautiful scenery and the lakes in particular attract visitors to the area during the summer and the winter.
Furthermore, one of the three officially recognized mineral water springs is located there, the spring of Xino Nero (Sour Water). Apart from the production of mineral water, the area is known for the production of fruit juices. |

Nimfeo (53 km from Florina), on the slopes of Mt. Vitsi (1.350 meters altitude), is both a winter and a summer resort, with delightful houses built according to the local style.
Further up the mountain is the village of Pissoderi (1.420 meters altitude). This part of the prefecture holds the greatest interest for visitors, with two lakes, which form the natural borders of Greece with Albania and the former Yugoslavia.
These lakes, Mikri and Megali Prespa, are situated 850 meters above sea level and are separated by a narrow strip of land.
The shores of the smaller lake are filled with reeds that every year provide shelter for many kinds of birds. Looking as though it is floating in the middle of the lake is the islet of Aghios Ahilios, with both ancient and Byzantine ruins; its rocky coast harbors caves once used as shrines, whose walls are decorated with religious paintings. |
